Description
The international conference in conjunction with World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) will be held at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris from 5 to 6 May 2014.
Since its first proclamation by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993, World Press Freedom Day which falls on 3 May serves as an occasion to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of expression and press freedom as well as the need to create a free, independent and pluralistic media environment.
This year’s World Press Freedom Day focuses on the global theme “Media Freedom for a Better Future: Shaping the Post-2015 Development Agenda”. The interrelated issues of the role of free media in underpinning good governance and effective institutions, the safety of journalists as a prerequisite element of the rule of law, and the issue of reporting and monitoring the progress of the sustainable development goals including access to information will be part of the discussion.
