From May 6 to 9, the UNESCO office in Doha, in partnership with OHCHR Doha will organize a training on Human Rights Based Approach (HRBA) and journalists’ safety.

On 6 May 2014, the first session will focus on International Human Rights Law and Media Freedom. More specifically, there will first be a presentation on International Human Rights Standards related to media protection (presented by Dr. Elobaid Elobaid, Head of the UN Human Rights Training and Documentation), followed by an open discussion. This will be followed by a presentation and working groups concentrating on assessing media coverage of human rights issues in the MENA region and identifying the challenges which face objective media coverage. The second session that day is titled Human Rights Based Approach for Media coverage. The five basic principles of a human rights based approach will be addressed by Farid Hamdan (UN Human Rights Training and Documentation Centre) and be followed by a discussion.

7 May 2014 will be a field work day, where participants will be divided into four working groups in order to apply the concept of HRBA. The workshop participants will be requested to develop mock reports on different human rights issues by using the HRBA main elements.

8 May 2014 will start with a presentation on “the role of oversight bodies in the protection of media and journalists” by Dr. Mohamed Aujjar (Director of the Centre for Democracy, Media and Human Rights). Afterwards there will be a plenary discussion held where the reports of the working groups will be presented. The last session of that day will focus on the safety and security of journalists.

9 May 2014 will focus on the safety and security of journalists. To close the training program, certificates will be distributed among the participants and an official closing ceremony will be held.
