Description
Celebration of World Press Freedom Day 2014, on 6 May 2014, Stockholm
The Swedish National Commission for UNESCO arranges a seminar on Safety of Journalists in cooperation with The Kality Foundation and Swedish Reporters without Borders on 6 May in Stockholm, in connection to the World Press Freedom Day.
The purpose of the seminar is to bring interested parties together to discuss the alarming situation for journalists and to find a way forward. The idea is to launch a practical book/booklet on next year’s World Press Freedom Day on how journalists can improve their safety when working in conflict zones and unsafe areas. This year’s seminar is a start in that direction.
The idea of the “security hand book” will be presented by freelance journalist Martin Schibbye, who will be the editor of the hand book and who has himself experience of being imprisoned for his journalistic work (in Ethiopia). A panel consisting of other well-known and experienced Swedish journalists – Jan Helin, chief editor at the newspaper Aftonbladet, Johanne Hildebrandt, author and former war correspondent, Martin von Krogh, freelance photographer and Åsa Ohlsson, Swedish Union of Journalists – will discuss his ideas. The panel will be moderated by journalist Jesper Bengtsson who has formerly been the chairman of Swedish Reporters without Borders.
The seminar will be followed-up by a more concrete seminar this fall.
